horizon
I have also been fascinated with minimal open landscapes, nothing but the horizon - a line that separates the earth and sky. So, with this fascination in mind, I set out for a long road trip (3500km+) to four different salt lakes in Australia. Just me, a swag, camera (thanks Nikon Australia), tripod, 50L water and a litre of sunscreen I set out, making sure that the experience, not the captures, was the most important consideration.
The experience was spectacular. Most places had no mobile reception; actually, I think I only talked to a couple of people.
The locations were very remote, and being out on the salt was a very surreal experience. Sometimes, with no landscape references, it became hard to focus, hard to judge distances, and the silence was so beautiful. Add the 45 degree + (Celsius) and it was, at times, a very out-of-body experience.
The photography, inspired by the colour field painting of the 50’s to 70’s, I was attempting to investigate what happens when you remove any form of subject (or focal point) from the image. This turns out to be impossible, but the intent has produced some interesting results.
